Next Generation Metal Powder Bed Systems: The Multi-kilowatt Laser Solution

Why Metal Printed Parts Have Random Unit-to-Unit Variations Limiting their Transition from Prototype to Production

Fonon Corporation:  The Next Generation of Metal Powder Bed Systems

Orlando, FL, October 26th, 2016 – Today’s metal printing systems use a laser designed for the rapid cutting of metal that both over-heats and under-heats the metal powder presenting a non-uniform laser illumination across the build-plate.  There is simply too wide of a range of temperatures on the powder bed randomly creating effects on a given layer ranging from unmelted powder to hot spots of residual stress.

There are a number of articles on the subject matter by leading research facilities and universities. There is no algorithm, model or sensor that can correct for a laser beam that is hot in the center with rapid temperature roll-off.

Fonon Corporation has developed a multi-kilowatt laser that presents a consistent, predictable laser illumination across the build-plate.  Eliminating the wide variations in temperatures on the powder bed battlefield, metal printing experts are able to close the gap on wide unit-to-unit variations of metal printed parts.
