PPG Automotive OEM Glass – Supplier Recognition
PPG Industries applauds the leadership and technical staff of Fonon Technologies for successful development and commercialization of fiber laser technology for the Evansville glass fabrication facility. The technical requirements of laser deleting PPG’s Sungate ® coating were quite challenging. Fonon Technologies “can do” determination culminated in a simplified lasing process for Evansville and fully met our expectations. PPG is most appreciative that Fonon Technologies pulled out all stops in order to meet PPG’s aggressive installation timing.
Throughout the discovery and development phase, Fonon Technologies demonstrated competency and commitment to meet PPG’s technical needs. The project required significant amounts of experiments and evaluations in the lab and at the Evansville plant. With the close oversight of PPG’s R&D specialist, Chuck Voeltzel, several technical breakthroughs elevated PPG’s confidence in the new lasing technology for our application.
Fonon Technologies was given the contract to proceed with ordering appropriate lasers and lens on June 8 with anticipation of a July 4 week installation while the Evansville facility was idle. In less than four weeks, Fonon Technologies procured five laser systems and components from Germany, executed backup contingency plans, fabricated cabinets for the equipment, validated equipment in the lab, worked closely with the Evansville maintenance organization on line integration, and completed the installation. Fonon Technologies supported the startup during July 11 week, and the plant incurred no downtime or quality upsets. Since startup, the plant has operated three entire months without any incident.

Prior to selecting the Fonon Technologies laser, we sent samples to several companies. Fonon Technologies made the clearest and most consistent mark by far and marked the part without noticeable burning of the material. Most of the other laser marks ranged from nearly no mark to holes bored in the surfaces. The Fonon Technologies mark was very consistent. When the customer changed codes (several times) and plastic materials, Fonon Technologies did numerous tests in their lab, at no cost, to verify marking quality and cycle time. Our machine required marking the human readable code and 2D matrix on two pens during the chassis dwell time. Available marking time was less than one second.
Their system cost more than some competitive systems, but they were the only ones who could do the job this well and the customer was willing to pay more for their system. The customer is now pursuing Fonon Technologies systems for other marking applications.
We found their system reasonably easy to use and integrate. The end result was an excellent marking system with extremely long life and near-zero maintenance. I’d certainly use them again for this kind of application.
