Despite components made using metal 3D printing finding their way into everything from automobiles to power generators, airplanes and even rockets, the process is still far from perfect. While metal 3D printing is quite useful for the manufacturing of parts that have highly complex geometries and other shapes that are un-castable with traditional fabrication technologies, there are many limitations that make it unsuitable for most mass-produced metal parts. Not only is the process itself time consuming, but it is also expensive and any finished parts will usually require a considerable amount of post processing.

Fonon Corporation Announces Specialized High-Volume Bullet Cartridge Micro-Laser Engraving System for Munitions Industry Applications

August 12, 2015

Fonon’s subsidiary, Laser Photonics’ LaserTower™ BulletMaster™ processes 9,000 rounds/hour supporting all major bullet standards and calibers.

LAKE MARY, FL-(August 12, 2015)-Fonon Corporation (“Fonon”) is pleased to announce a specialized micro-laser engraving system to provide unique ID codes on shell casings.  The LaserTower™ BulletMaster™ is designed to provide traditional munitions marking information with the ability to incorporate unique ID codes allowing traceability to the individual ammunition purchase.   By tracing the associated sales record, law enforcement personnel are able to trace the ammunition involved in a crime, thereby creating an additional avenue that traditionally has not existed.

bAccording to the United States Department of Justice, there is a greater than 30% chance of never identifying a suspect in homicides involving firearms unless ballistic evidence can be quickly linked to the shooter.  The LaserTower™ BulletMaster™ system provides ammunition manufacturers the ability to add unique ID codes on their shell casings, providing law enforcement with modern crime fighting tools.

Most major ammunition manufacturers already use bar coding for inventory control and management.  Ammunition manufacturers would include the ID code in their current bar coding system.  Ammunition retailers will scan the bar code on each box of bullets along with the purchaser’s driver’s license, linking each shell casing to the individual purchasing the rounds.

MARKETWIRED ARTICLE…continued

When metal NANO-powders are released from their storage chamber to be loaded onto the build plate, after traveling no more than 8 inches, these metals segregate into different sizes that impact the uniform melting with higher mass spheres on the bottom layer and lighter mass spheres of the top layer.  Fonon has a proprietary technology that ensures the nano-powders are evenly distributed throughout each build layer for the most demanding applications.

Fonon’s 3D FUSION™ technology incorporates the industry’s first application specific laser optimized for 3D metal printing applications.  Standard systems utilize a laser traditionally used for subtractive material processing in that the power density profile is Gaussian or bell curve shaped.  With uniform melting critical for the highest quality, Fonon’s laser exhibits a flat power density profile ensuring the uniform melting of the metal powder.  The company’s proprietary 1KW laser provides the fastest through-put rate, but even more important, the laser is 95% scalable during operation providing the smallest beam spot size during critical build layers that require the tightest tolerances or finish.

Fonon is also setting precedent for build plate size incorporating the company’s proprietary Scalable Reach Technology (SRT™) that provide build plate sizes ranging from 500mm x 500mm to 4000mm x 2000mm.  Incorporating the company’s mature building block technology into 3D metal printing systems expands end-user applications to include manufacturing automotive engines or turbine blades as well as tooling large-volume production systems that are currently limited to typical build plate sizes of 250mm x 250mm in standard systems.

Additional advantages include:

  • FUSION™ technology to control the coefficient of thermal expansion of the metal during processing for the most demanding applications
  • Metal gaseous techniques to control density
  • Emerging metal liquid technology to enhance performance

If your 3D metal printing application is deadlocked unable to move into commercial production failing to meet quality, reliability, or production specifications, Fonon will design an application specific 3D Metal Printing System around your unique requirement using the same laser-based system formula for success the company has embodied for 45 years.

Galvo Driven Laser Marking Systems VS Flat Bed (Flying Optic) Laser Marking Systems

When looking into purchasing a Laser Marking System, it is very important to recognize that there are two very distinctly different types of Laser Marking Systems being offered in the market place today, namely; Ultra High Speed/High Precision Galvo Driven Systems and Flat Bed (Flying Optic) Systems. Galvo Driven Systems (GDS) are many times faster and more precise than Flying Optics and considerably more reliable. In addition, GDS also demonstrates superior control over marking depth.

GDS is extremely fast with precise motors directing a beam of light with incredible precision and repeatability. These incredible motors have been used by Fonon Technologies for more than a decade and have proven to be incredibly consistent and reliable. It is not uncommon to see systems nearly 20 years old that have never had a Galvo Motor replaced.

GDS can work using Vector or Raster based images where Flying Optics utilize only Raster based artwork. GDS actually draw characters or images much as someone would create the same image by hand using a pen and paper.

You have the control to speed the laser up or down and/or adjust power & frequency of the laser giving you complete control over the accuracy and penetration of the laser into the metal work surface. In contrast the Flat Bed (Flying Optic) style systems have a head that physically travels back and forth on an assembly of belts, pulley’s and guides dropping pulses of energy as it passes each time eventually creating an image. It is a very similar concept to the older plotters and Dot Matrix Printers only it drops pulses of light energy in place of ink. You do not have near the control or the precision that you can get using a Galvo Driven system design.

The one design feature that is typically viewed as being a benefit with the Flat Bed (Flying Optic) system is the fact that they come with a fairly large bed area. Customers may initially feel it would be beneficial to have an operator load up a large number of parts at one time and
let the machine run, however when you look at the overall cycle time to complete the process, you could have marked potentially several
times as many pieces in that same period using a Galvo Driven System. There is no question that if you have a high volume of parts and you are looking to optimize throughput, Galvo Driven Technology is the superior choice.
Marking Depth is also an important consideration especially with metals. Achieving high-quality marking depth is a function of several things. You need to have enough power from your laser, the right spot size and a combination of the right speed and frequency settings to optimize the marking such that the material is either vaporized or blown out of the cavity to give the required marking depth. It is just not possible to control these parameters with a Flying Optic System. In fact, there is a variation in beam size as the laser beam is never perfectly parallel and actually diverges slightly as it leaves the laser. Without the ability to control this divergence, there will naturally be variations
in the cutting performance between different parts on the table due to changes in the raw beam size during operation.

TPicture3hese limitations materially affect the size, depth and quality of workmanship especially on metals.

Picture2

In summary, Galvo Driven Systems have clearly emerged as the technology of choice demonstrating faster marking speeds, larger through-put rates, superior control & accuracy of marking depths and consistent quality of workmanship when compared against Flat Bed (Flying Optic) systems.

Fonon Technologies Develops World’s First Portable Hand-Held Laser Marking System

October 17, 2014

Lake Mary, Florida – November 19th 2013 – Fonon Technologies introduces its latest innovative Portable Hand-Held Fiber Laser Marking System that produces permanent, legible marks on a variety of materials. This new laser system is a safe, reliable, no-maintenance, Direct Part Marking alternative for Nd:YAG and Nd:YVO4 lasers. The system is more reliable than current Nd:YAG lasers, delivering 50,000 hours of maintenance-free operation. The extremely versatile unit can be easily moved for convenient operation to any location and is capable of marking materials ranging in size from miniature to considerably large equipment that wouldn’t fit into traditional marking systems. Easy installation and intuitive software allow for a quick start-up.

Components

Components include a Q-Switched Fiber Laser, Scan Head, PC Controller, Power Supply, Marking Software, and a Red Diode Pointer for easy setup. The software used by the Hand-Held Laser is the most advanced marking software available, providing a simple interface for fills, automation, graphic importers, parts handling, machine control, transformations, quality, and more. The laser requires only a low voltage power source (110/220), and has an excellent beam quality with a small spot size for precision marking. The Hand-Held Marking System can be optimized to meet any production need.

Applications

The portable system is ideal for military, large industrial equipment, and applications such as Alphanumerics, Logos, Graphics, Part Numbers, Schematics, Serialization, Matrix Codes, Barcodes, Paint Removal, ITO Removal, Backlit Buttons, and much more. The United States government and Home Land Security recently initiated programs incorporating laser technology as an essential part of present and future defense applications. In the private sector, government contractors are now using lasers to comply with strict governmental regulations. Fonon Technologies envisioned this opportunity and successfully introduced and delivered applications compatible with military standards, while continuing to perfect our laser technology for future commercial and defense applications.

Materials

The Hand-Held Laser System can process a wide variety of materials including stainless steel, aluminum, carbide, polycarbonate, titanium, nickel, PVC, plastics, rubber, iron, chrome, painted metal alloys, multi-coated materials, and galvanized metals.

Gun manufacturers urged to experience the Canyon™ deep engraving system

October 16, 2014

Lake Mary, FL., March 5, 2014 – Fonon Technologies, the industry leader in developing high-tech fiber and CO2 laser systems for marking, cutting and engraving applications, is targeting gun manufacturers to experience the Canyon™ deep engraving systems.

Gun manufacturers have long marked metal gun parts with logos, numbers for inventory purposes, to fulfill UID requirements, as well as other engraving needs.  Methods for marking were as varied as the parts.  Some parts were cast or molded with logos while others had serials numbers marked with dot peen machines.  However, Fonon Technologies has the ultimate direct parts marking and deep engraving system for the gun industry, the Canyon™ Series.

The Canyon™ Deep Engraver Series by Fonon Technologies is ideal for performing precision deep 2D and 3D engravings on metal surfaces. By combining fiber laser technology, proprietary FiberScan C3™ software and industrial grade-safe enclosures, these systems are quickly replacing outdated methods (Nd:Yag systems, mechanical and acid etching). The Canyon™ Series uses specialized pulse configurations for deeper material ablation while creating perfect edge quality with straight & smooth walls in unmatched cycle times. These systems are specifically designed for high speed metal removal with no re-melting while being able to perform enhanced image detailing and finesse engraving.

“Gun manufacturers are discovering that fiber lasers are not only perfect for marking and engraving metal parts, they take up less floor space, are easily upgradeable so that the system can grow and change directly with the applications and they also offer the fastest speeds, therefore increasing throughput,” said the Marketing Manager for Fonon Technologies.

Each system in the Canyon Series has been built to operate in the harshest industrial conditions while operating on a 24/7 cycle. Each unit comes with special exhaust, ventilation and particle collectors which promptly removes the dust particles created when deep engraving metals. To prevent any system corruptions or malfunctions the electronics are stored completely separated on an air controlled chamber and sealed from the processing area.
